24 Jul 2014

A German tourist was on Thursday at around 5:30pm shot dead and her Ugandan boyfriend seriously wounded by unknown assailants as they walked along the streets of  Mombasa's old town area.

The attackers who had firearms reportedly confronted the victims as they were walking along the streets before shooting them both and killing the woman on the spot. Her body was moved to a private hospital mortuary. Her Ugandan counterpart reportedly sustained a gunshot wound on his neck and was rushed to Coast Provincial General Hospital in critical condition. According to witnesses, the gunmen also stole a handbag from their victims.

Confirming the incident, Mombasa county commander Robert Kitur said they were still investigating the attack.

“We have received information of another unfortunate cold murder of a foreigner. But details remains scanty at this stage,” said the county commander.

The police said the woman was shot multiple times at close range by the gunmen who afterwards escaped on foot, disappearing  into the densely populated Mombasa Old Town.

Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterer (KAHC), Coast branch Executive Officer Sam Ikwaye said they were yet to establish the nationalities of the victims.

“This is yet another setback to the sector that has not yet revived due to insecurity threats in the country,” Ikwaye lamented.

The attack occurred just a few meters from where a Russian tourist was recently shot dead by unknown gunmen. The thirty-year-old Maria Tatyana was murdered as she was being shown around by a tour guide. No arrests have been made so far in relation to the murder.
