Gor Mahia rise to summit as Leopards, Tusker succumb to defeat

Gor Mahia on Wednesday climbed to the top of the Kenyan Premier League after beating Muhoroni Youth 3-0 at City Stadium.

The win propelled K’Ogaloto the top on 20 points from 10 matches.

Chemelil Sugar moved to second after handing Tusker a second consecutive defeat in at the league in a hard-fought 1-0 win in Ruaraka.

The victory saw the two sides swap places with, the brewers dropping to third on 18 points, same as the sugar milers who enjoy a superior goal difference.

At Nyayo Stadium, AFC Leopard slost 1-0 to Mathare United. Hussein Zzinda's screamer silenced the roar of the Leopards in the closely contested tie. Earlier at the same venue, Thika United and Sofapaka fought to a barren draw as Ulinzi Stars held Bandari to a 1-1 draw at the Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa.

At the Mumias Complex, hosts Western Stima drew 1-1 with Sony Sugar as KCB came from behind to see-off hosts Top Fry All Stars 3-2 in Nakuru. At Kawangware, it was another disappointing day for Briton Tim Brytte after Nairobi City Stars lost 2-1 to KRA.

At City Stadium, an electric first-half saw the Green Army coast to an easy 3-0 lead at the break, their biggest margin of victory so far. A dominant play in the early interval saw K’Ogalo’s Shaban Kenga, Geoffrey Kizito and Erick Ochieng score in the 25th, 33rd and 42nd minutes respectively. Kenga had the simplest of tasks, tapping home after being put through by Ochieng.

The latter then scored via a header three minutes before the break to sandwich Kizito’s goal from a rasping free kick.

At Tusker’s Ruaraka turf, a last-gasp Innocent Wafula goal was enough for Chemelil Sugar to beat the brewers on a day all 16 KPL teams were in action.
